ABANDLA75
Hi, My green card is going to expire in May 2015. I haven't applied for citizenship yet. I have to travel out of country for 3 weeks in February. Wondering if I apply for citizenship before leaving the country or do I have to apply after I return from my trip? Thanks, Ananth Link to comment
pontevecchio
Your Green Card needs to be valid for at least 6 months before you can apply for Naturalization. Hence you need to apply for and get a renewed GC before applying for Citizenship. Link to comment

It is a good idea to renew the GC, though, because the GC acts as documentation of permanent residency. Link to comment

JoeF
USCIS GUIDE TO NATURALIZATION, PAGE 16, QUESTION AND ANSWER 24. I believe that is wrong. I have not found any such requirement in the law. And the law is what matters, not a PDF, even if it is made available on the USCIS wbesite. Please provide a link to the actual law. Thank you. Until then, I stand by my assertion that there is no requirement of a valid Greencard as prerequisite for naturalization. Even if the GC expires, the person is still an LPR. And that is all that matters. Link to comment
