tuxuser Posted May 19, 2013 Report Posted May 19, 2013 Hello, I have few questions regarding my situation and how to proceed from here. A short background: I have arrived in the US in 2008 for my Masters under F1 visa. Finished my Masters in the Dec 2010. Started working as a full time employee at a University which is Non Profit from February 2011 under my OPT. I obtained my H1B visa through the university in November 2011 which is Cap Exempt as the university is a Non Profit organization. I started my PhD at a different university this is close to where I live and I take part time classes while working full time at the first university. The university where I work, applied for my Green Card under EB3 and my I140 is approved. My priority date is in March 2012. I would like to work at the same university till I finish my PhD and would like to find jobs at the same or a different university or in the industry. My questions are: What is the best way to proceed, to get a Green Card if I choose to go to the Industry. Is it hard to find employers who would wait for my new H1B (transfer) as my current H1B is cap exempt? I will really appreciate your response. Thank you
t75 Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 You realize that a GC is for employment at the company that is filing for you in that position.
pontevecchio Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 Talk to your PhD supervisor about your aims and ask for advise. I would be glad to know which university lets you do a part time PhD. Best of luck.
t75 Posted May 21, 2013 Report Posted May 21, 2013 Many people do coursework part time. However, they generally are required to spend at least 1 year in full time residence for research.
pontevecchio Posted May 21, 2013 Report Posted May 21, 2013 Thank You, t75. I suppose that may mean finishing in a decade as opposed to say 6 years or less which seems par for the course
