Travel to New Zealand on H1-B visa and new passport

Hi,

I am currently on H1B visa stamped in my Indian passport valid util May 2014. However, my passport expires in July 2013. I am applying for renewal at the San Francisco embassy.

After I get my new passport, can I travel to New Zealand when I carry both my old passport (for US re-entry since visa is stamped in this one) and new passport?

Is it ok to do so? I am planning to get New Zealand on my new passport.

Can you give some suggestions is this is not the correct approach?
