Got only 1 year extension after 6th year (I-140 approved). Safe to switch job?

I am with company A from last 6 years on H1. I got my I-140 (EB 3) approved already in 2010. My company filed for my extension and I got approved only for 1 year ( from december, 2012 to december 2013) as opposed to 3 year. When I talked to lawyer, he said, it depends on USCIS how much time they want to give. Seems like my project SOW submitted to them had an end date of January, 2013 so it got approved only for 1 year. Now if I change the job and if the new company transfers my H1 and it gets approved only for the remaining period of my current H1 or again for 1 year(December, 2013), what will happen to my H1 extension after December, 2013. Does it mean that in the new company I have to have PERM and I-140 approved before December, 2013 to be eligible for 3 year extension? or if the current company does not revoke I-140, my new company can file H1 extension based on my current company's I-140.

Thanks for the reply. Another question. What if my new company already applied for I-140 but did not receive any answer. So can my new company still file for 3 year H1 extension based on my current company's I-140 (hoping, it will not be revoked). so basically if my current company do not revoke my I-140, can it be used indefinitely (in reality, until I get my new I-140 approved from new company) to get 3- year H1 extension?
