H1B Renewal and H4

Hi all, my company's lawyer applied for my H1B extension on May 29th as my visa expires on September Sept 21. Initially I thought I could apply for my wife's H4 visa once my H1B is approved. Since it's still in initial review stage I'm little worried that I would not get enough time to apply for my wife's H4 visa extension. What should I do now? Can I just go ahead and apply for her extension with my receipt number or do I have to wait for approval on my H1B extension?
