H1 Stamping (Which one will be honored)

Hello,

I have my H1 visa valid till Jan'2013 on I-797 and has expired on passport. I am planning to travel to India during Oct' and Nov. Before travelling I am thinking of applying to H1 extenstion and so that on the way back I will get that stamped for 3yrs. While talking to my HR department, I was told that even if I get 3yrs extenstion, stamping will be done based on the old I-797, which is valid till Jan-2013. My thinking was stamping is done based the latest approval and in my case with extenstion I will get that done till Jan'2016.

Is this true that stamping will not be done based on renewed visa while I have old I-797 valid?
