H1 Extension for only approved H1 after its expiry

Currently I am working on L1 extension valid till May 2013. Have also h1 approved but it is not stamped and valid only till Oct 2012. I won't be traveling to India in near future and won't be able to get H1 stamped beofre its expiry.

Was unable to get H1 stamping last year as my l1 stamping date was taken and then my h1 approval had come. didn't had time to go for "No show" as had to return to US in 2 weeks time.

So, next year in feb 2013 can I apply for H1 extension (which is just approved and expired in oct 2012)? This is required as my L1 will expire in May 2013 and for the new H1 will have to again check on the quota. If I can apply for H1 extension after it has expired then it will help me to move to H1 status next year.

Within the parameters of L1 plus H1 time is totally 6 years, you can have any sponsor file a H1 for you at any time.
