GauravCM
Wanted some clarity on this matter which seems rather niche. I on currently on my H1B grace period. I intend to depart to India permanently ( probably may want to return in the future) somewhere in mar 2020. I have received pay for a part of Jan 2020 after which i resigned. Do i need to obtain a Sailing Permit from IRS ? form 1040-C . I did file my taxes for 2019 and wanted to know if one month's pay on H1B does indeed require me to file 1040-C. Any help clarifying this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Quote Link to comment
JoeF
You need to pay taxes for 2020 next year. The sailing permit just shows that you have paid all taxes due until today. Quote Link to comment
pontevecchio
Since your taxes are current, I would just move back and not complicate things. You will find on searching that only a few thousand such permits are applied for when there should be hundreds of thousands. If your taxes are clear, it should not matter. The months pay if less than 12250 means no tax returns are due next year. Quote Link to comment

The IRS guy said that they rarely see people asking for it. Quote Link to comment
