SBHT Posted April 30, 2019 Report Posted April 30, 2019 My green card expires in 10 months, and for now I'd like to renew it and not apply for citizenship. I started working on the online form, and seems that they require the current green card to expire in 6 months before completing and sending the form. However, I saw at various websites that the processing time can take 10-12 months. Is it true that I can not apply now for a green card renewal? If so, what do I do in the 6 months until I get the new green card? THank you.

If you need proof of permanent residency after your current green card expires and before you get your new green card, you can get an appointment at a local USCIS office to get an I-551 stamp.

Thank you very much. If I may ask - 1) When do I make the appointment for I-551? Should I do it now? Wait till it's 6 months before the expiration of the green card? 2) I got here on work visa, and here got married to an American citizen, and had a status adjustment. I do not have an immigration visa stamp on my passport (or any other visa stamp for that matter). Can I still get the I-551 or is that a problem? 3) With the stamp, am I able to travel internationally with no problem entering back into the US? Your help is much appreciated?

I-551 = proof of permanent residency 3. yes
