Expired passport - applying green card

My passport expired early 2015, but I did not notice it until recently. My green card application process has started. Labor was approved. Now preparation is going on to file I-140. My h1b expires in august 2016.

 

My question is, is a valid passport needed for the green card process or for the filing of I-140. The last time I went to India was 4 years back, so my passport expiration date completely went out of my head. I am a freaked out now. Please someone let me know. I searched google, and I am getting all sorts of conflicting answers.

You don't need passport for I140 approval.
