Need help - query regarding travel - H1B transfer is pending.

Hi, I recently started working for a product development company as a FTE. my petition is filed in normal processing. and we all know that California service center is taking more than 6-7months to approve the petition. i have a travel planned in may. I got the receipt number for the transfer petition filed with uscis. Can i travel without the approval? I  have a valid visa till 2018. will it affect during port of entry?

I am same situation. I transferred my Visa (while in US) and my family (who have valid H4 stamping on their passport from old employer and never traveled ) are all set to travel. However since my visa transfer is not over yet, I am not sure to call my family (though they have valid stamping + current petition receipt)... 

Let me know whether you traveled with such status and if so what was your experience at PoE.
