Can I file for H1B ammendment while my H1 extension is pending?

My company has filed for my H1 extension( beyond 7 years) a week ago. I now live in the DC area and want to relocate to Boston. I am a mgmt. consultant and my client will remain the same, but my home office is changing from DC to Boston. I heard somewhere that I cannot file for an amendment until my H1 extension is approved. Is that true? Has anyone have any experience with this?
