Studying on expired H4 visa

Hi,

 

I am currently in the US on H4 visa which expired in Sept 2015 and am still waiting for a decision on extension. I got admission for Masters program in one of the 'A' rated Universities and classes are scheduled to start from Jan 11 2016. I plan to apply for COS from H4 to F1 once the extension gets approved.

 

From what I know, H4 visa holders can study in the US. However, can you please advise if i can legally join the university and start attending classes while my H4 extension case is still under review. 

 

Also, is there a rule that I have to study atleast for 1 year (or) 2 semisters on F1 visa at a minimum if I have to be eligible for OPT.
