Travel back on a valid H1 with J1 stamped

Greetings!

 

I'm currently on an H1 visa thats valid upto June 30. I'm transfering to a different residency program starting July 01 and for that purpose would be switching to a J1 visa. If I go to India in May to get my J1 stamped, would I be able to return back in a week on the valid H1 visa to resume my current activity? 

Any advice regarding this matter would be highly appreciated.
