Change of Status from B1 to F2

Hello,

I am on F1 visa doing my masters here. My husband came to visit me on a B1/B2 tourist visa. I would like to change his status from B1 to F2 visa. After doing some research, I found out that my university will issue an I-20 for dependent spouse. Using that I wil have to apply to USCIS for change of status.

1. How soon can we get the response from USCIS, that my spouse status has been changed to F2?

2. Does he need to go back to India after his 6 months stay of B1 is completed and go for stamping process in India? Or can he just stay with me and stamping in India sometime later?

Any quick response is greatly appreciated.

1. 3 to 4 months.

2. It is better for him to return, apply for a F2 visa and enter US.
