Can I switch employers before H1-B start date?

Hi: 

I am currently on OPT & and my current employer will be applying for my H1B on April 1st under premium processing. If I i get selected for the H1B lottery, I understand I'd know by mid - april.

 

Do i have to stay with the same employer till Oct-1st before being able to transfer my H1B if get another job offer or can i switch employers before Oct 1 and use h1B authorization with that employer?

 

When is the earliest I can switch employers? I do not have another job in hand but I am on lookout for a better opportunity.
