Can i apply for SSN before my H1 activation date

Hi,

 

I am presently on H4 and my H1-B petition has been approved and will be active from October 1st 2014.

Can i apply for SSN now before my H1 activation date so that i will be able to join work from October 1st itself.

Whether you have SSN or not you can join work from 1st Oct. Approach your local SSN office on 1st Oct.

No, you can only apply for an SSN once you are in H1 status.

But that doesn't prevent you from joining the employer. It is perfectly fine to not have the SSN yet. And you also need to get paid, even if you don't have the SSN yet. Modern payroll systems can handle that situation just fine.
