is it safe to take up CPT with a IT consultancy? He promised to place me at a client location within a month. (i am done with 2nd semester and my major is also in computer science) Would it affect my status in anyway?

No, that would be an obvious CPT abuse.

CPT is for work as integral part of the curriculum ONLY. Working at some arbitrary job through a consulting company can by definition never be a part of a curriculum.

Abuse of CPT will kill your career in the US forever!

Its illegal...complain to DOL about the shady employer....he'll gradually ask you for H1 fees and al.
