Travel during H1B transfer

Hi

I have an H1B stamping that is valid till Oct 2013. I'm switching jobs and the new employer has filed for the transfer. I don't have the approval notice in hand yet but I have the notice of receipt in hand (I-797C). Can I travel outside the US with the receipt notice and a valid H1B stamping? I'm not expecting the approval to come back before my return to the country.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
