Passport renewal

My Indian passport is expiring in feb 2014. I currently filed H1, but my change status got denied and so I filed for MTR. I am currently maintaining my status by attending the college. I have an I-20 which is till 1/17 and I-797B. I have registered for Spring 2014 semester, but waiting for new extended I-20.

 

I plan to renew my passport at Chicago consulate in coming weeks. Question is:

• My visa are also expired back in 2011.Does anyone know if its safe to appear or what documents are needed or what the procedure is. I am told by BLS to appear BLS office, but nothing else.

• Have any faced similar situation- then please share your experience.
