nav_ct
Hi, I changed my name in India 6 months back and I have my new name in my Indian passport, Marriage certificate and US H4 visa stamping(done 3 months back). I have a SSN with my old name(I used to work 3 years back). I tried to change my name in the SSN office and they said that since I am on a non-work visa, no changes can be made to my file. Even an Alias cannot be added to my file. Did anyone face this issue? The SSN office says that I need to change to a work visa which will enable me to update my SSN file.I need to get a CT driving license(I have a valid NJ license with my old name) and they said they wont accept the old SSN. They say my new name should at least be an Alias. Also, when I file taxes, do I use my old name or new name?Any input is greatly appreciated Link to comment

JoeF
Go to another SSN office. While a new SSN can't be issued to somebody on H4, changes to an existing file can of course be made. Link to comment
