Dependents stay without Primary Applicant

I'm on L1 with expired visa and having valid I-94 till end of 2014 for me and my dependents.  I have to leave US on very personal emergency and I'm going alone. I know to come back to US, I need visa.
My question can dependents stay in US (with valid I-94) in situations where primary visa holder need to leave country due to personal emergency?  If not, what type of repercussions it will have in the future. Please advice.

As long as your period of stay outside US is not too long it should be fine.
