Opt expired h1b approved. Can I travel to India?

Greetings,

My H1B (new application, not transfer) got approved this month (for FY 2013). I was on OPT which had expiry date of June 17th, 2013. My school has already extended the I20 till September 30 2013 and I have a valid F1 visa till 2015.

I want to go to India sometime in the last week of August and return back mid week of September. My question is:

Is it safe to go to India having approved H1B? Will I need to get my H1B stamped before returning in September? Can't I come back on F1 status itself.
