H1 to H4 and back to H1 change of status

I am currently holding an H1 and residing in the US. I would need to switch to H4 to take a sabbatical from work for a few months during which I'll be travelling to India. While there, I'll have to get my H4 stamped and will be travelling back to US with the stamped H4. Now, while I'm back in the US and when I do have a client letter, am I eligible to apply for a change of status back to my H1? In other words, what will happen to my H1 after I get my H4 stamped? And how can I get it reactivated ?

I am also in the same boat. Can I look for the project first, start working and then get the client letter and apply for change of status ?
