Experts please advise - travel on current AP while AP renewal in process

Hello,

I have a valid AP till May 2013. I have applied for a renewal a week back. I need to travel out of US and back in Feb 2013.

Question is -

1.) Can i travel on current valid AP while the AP renewal is in progress?

2.) Is the renewal deemed abandoned if I travel out while it is pending?

I am going to be back in a week and will be well within the expiration date of the current AP (valid till May 2013)

Please advise.
