221g blue slip response pending but H1b is expiring

I am full time employee. My H1b is valid till April 2013. In November 2012 I got a 221g blue slip during my interview. My Company is arranging all the documents till today. I am hoping to submit all required document in Jan 2013. my question is once I submit the documents and If I don't get a response for 221g then can my employer file for H1b extension while I am in India?. I am currently put on leave without pay as I haven't returned to my company and my company doesn't accommodate me to work offsite for onsite.
