Part time assignments while on H1b

Experts - Please help me out here.

I am on H1 visa and sometimes take up consulting and technical author work from small firms which pays me around 500-1000 bucks. This is not a steady income and happen once in 2 months or so.

My question - Is it legal? When they issue me cheque, also ask my SSN number and I give it to them. Will it cause any issues for me in future?

Please advise.

That is illegal. On H1, you can only work for your H1 employer.

You may work only for the employer for whom you have an approval notice. To work for 2 employers, you need concurrent H1Bs. Your current practice is illegal work; it isn't worth it.

Thank you for the response. I am not working for anyone. These are small projects which I do online.

Is the damage already done? How can I resolve this for the money I already received? Will it cause any problems for me?

First, you have to stop this immediately.

Second, consult with a good immigration lawyer.
