applying for re entry permit again

I am US green card holder on re entry permit in canada. My re entry permit is expiring soon and I plan to re apply it by temporarily visiting US. Issue is I have to submit my old re entry permit with the new applications, was wondering then how can I take the risk during the time interim without permit as I woud be travelling to and fro Canada?
