Transfer of visa without leaving the US

I was recently let go from a company as part of layoffs at the firm. In the midst of winding up and heading back I've managed to find a job. It took me 10 calendar days of my last payday to get the offer. I would like to know if the new company can file for a H1b transfer without me having to leave the US. I have a gap of 10 calendar days since my last paycheck. Or do I need to leave and re-enter via consulate processing?
