H1 - Law regarding change of employer and back to previous employer

On H1, I moved from Employer A to Employer B. If I would like to move back to Employer A, do I have to have a new I-94 or what does the law say regarding this?

The old employer was required by law to cancel the old H1.

So, if you want to go back to the old employer, they would have to file another H1, just like for every other transfer.

Would the process still be the same if the old employer has not yet cancelled it and I-94 is still valid?
