Can I fill out DS160 and schedule appointment before H1B extension is received?

I'm traveling to India in late December and wish to schedule an appointment for H1B visa at Mumbai. My lawyer has filed for extension of H1B status (since 6 years is up). Do I need to wait till this petition is approved before I schedule an appointment? Is there any question on the DS160 that asks for specific details in this petition? The petition is expected by the end of November but I'd like to get the visa date as early as possible.

With the delay in processing time, one would wait till the petition is approved to schedule an appointment for stamping. I'm sure you know that it is mandatory to have valid petition at time of interview.
