H1 to H4 status confusion

  Hi ,
  I came to US on H4 then applied for H1 and got the approval on May 26th 2012 . My spouse moved to new employer and filed a New H4 for me in July 2012. I am now confused with what status i am is it H1 or H4. some are saying that i am on H4 and some on H1 .
  I also heard that without knowing if i go and try to apply for SSN there may be chances of rejection/treated as a case of fraud and deport to india
  Can any one please clear this . its very urgent plssss

Your H1 is valid only from Oct 2012. If you have not filed your change of status from H4 to H1, then you are still on H4. Speak to your employer to initiate COS.

You will not be granted SSN on H4, that does not mean you will be deported for anything you do in the country.
