H1B Approved in Aug. No Job By Oct 2012

My H1B was filed by a renowned company. It was approved in Aug and today they say that their recruitment has been frozen. I do not have a job now.

1) How long can I stay in US on H1B before I find my new job?

2) Will there be any risk of getting my H1B transferred to a job lower in salary and designation?

There is no grace period for H1B employees, if they are laid-off

Can the H1B be transferred and if so, within how much time should the transfer application be filed? What are the ways to retain the H1B status in case there is another employer ready to take over the H1B application.

Also, does this qualify in "laid-off" category given that I am not hired after getting a H1B approval?
