workpermit expired,volunteer?

When my visa status changed from J2 to H4, my work permit expired. However I need to work under a supervisor for 6 more months to qualify for a licensing exam. Can I work as a volunteer under a private practitioner? The job does not involve any pay or monetary benefits.

You can not volunteer for a for-profit company or in any position that normally is paid.

That would be unauthorized work, even if there is no pay.
