How long does it take to get H1 extension approved if it is applied in CA?

If I understand your question correctly; you are trying to renew an expiring DL and your H1B extension is still under process and you already received a receipt from USCIS. You can renew your DL for one year with just the original receipt. In case if you application is not approved, you will be leaving the country anyways because you are out of status. What is the use of valid DL in that case.

Thanks! BUT - Which state does this apply to ? Is it applicable in CA? I know that in certain states you can NOT renew the DL if the H1 is not yet approved.

Im also curious to know which states need H1 to be approved before renewal. Im in IN and the state laws are stringent here.

Official answer - You can NOT renew DL unless you get a new I-94 in CA.

California DMV in Oakland does not renew DL based on receipt notice....They ask for I94 card and accept nothing else...I had this experience in 2009.
