First time H1B- Consulate selection

Hello everyone:

I'm an Indian citizen, and I've been living in the US for the past 5 years (Initially in F1 visa and then in H1), but never had the opportunity to visit India after changing my status from F1 to H1.

I now plan on visiting India and attend my first time H1 visa interview (H1 Renewal petition). Hence, I only have an expired F1 visa on my passport. I do not have a H1 stamp yet.

Do I have to choose a specific consulate based on the consular district, or can I pick any consulate in India ? My state of residence for the past 5 years has been in the US.

=> Call to VFS, India. They suggest getting the first h1b stamping from home country (IYC, India). They would tell you the appropriate embassy, usually closest to your home address.
