Transfer L1 to H1..can stamp in Canada

hi

Can someone help me here pls....

i have been in US on L1 visa for 5years now my company transfered me to a H1B visa for 1year.My H1B is approved last week. Now I need to go out of US to get it stamped on my passport.

My question is since I am a transfer case from L1 to H1b, for the 1st time do I have to go to my home country, India, or can I go to canada/Mexico ? I heard from some friends that you can only go to canada for Renewal / extension cases ?? is that right ?

I suppose you can go to either Canada for Stamping.
