GC and H4 to H1 Change of status

My wife is on H1 which is expiring in Jan 2013. Her GC processing started last month. We are planning to change her H1 to H4 (extended leave from work) without leaving US before Jan 2013. Will her GC application be valid if there is a change is status from H1 to H4? If so, can she start working once her GC gets approved (she will be in H4 when it gets approved).

Her application will be valid as long as her employer keeps the application valid without revoking.

Since GC is for future employment, she can start working once he gets the GC.
