Notice Period & Damages on H1B

Hello,

I have received an employment letter to join on new H1B from Oct 2012. In this its mentioned that I need to provide 4 weeks of notice period and failing to do so will lead to company damages to the tune of $10,000.

1. What is the notice period norm. I thought its 2 weeks.

2. Is the damages amount lawful ? if yes then what should be a reasonable amount ?

Find a better employer.

The employer can require any period. Whether the offer letter and your accepting the offer constitutes a contract or not is different question. A labor lawyer may be able to answer.

Ask them to remove both things, if they really need you, they should do it. If they don't, as JoeF said, find better employer.
