H4 Restamping with expired H1 Stamping and valid I797

My wife is travelling to India due to family medical emergency.

She has valid H4 I-797 approval untill May 2013 but Visa stamping on passport expired in Jan 2012.

Same is the case with my son.

I am on valid H1B visa with I -797 approved till May 2013 but passport stamping expired in Jab 2012.

My question is

1. Is it required that H1B holder have a valid stamping on passport for H4 holder to get restamping? The reason I ask this is on VFS site it says that h4 holder needs to bring copy of valid visa during interview ?

1. When she appears for a passport restamping at Mumbai consulate to return back to USA, what kind of questions she may face (She is travelling without me or son this time)
