Green Card assignment end.

hi,

My employer has just (2 months back) started my GC application. I am currently on L1B visa, and its going to get expire on DEC, 2012. I am not sure by that time what will be my GC application status will be. So I have following questions: -

1) If I travel to India when my visa expires. Will my GC application continues? if not, than atleast what level it shoud be, so that even if i am not in USA, it wont impact its processing.

2) is thr a limit in visa expiration time, before which GC needs to be applied. for e.g. can GC be applied when only 6 months are remaining in current VISA.
