Entering 7th year of H1: I-140 approved. Can I switch jobs?

Hi,

I am completing 6 years of H1B with my current employer in Sept and will be applying for an extension in couple of months. I understand that I will get another 3 years of extension considering my I-140 was approved back in 2008. What I am confused about is-

1. Once I get an extension, will it be possible for me to switch jobs and get a H1 transfer with another employer? From the forums, it appears to be doable. However, I am confused because H1 extension beyond 6 years is based on my green card application with the current employer so how would the future employer justify the transfer?

2. If its possible, do I ideally need to wait to get an extension and my 7th year of H1 to start (Oct'12) before I start looking for another job OR can I switch jobs now?

1. There is no guarantee that you'll get three year extension. It depends on your client letter and USCIS.

2. It better to wait till you get your extension.
