passport validity

I am on H1b visa status (not visa, just approved I-797A) untill 2014. My passport expires in 2 months. I will renew my passport this week.

But someone told me that I am out of status because passport should always have at least 6 months to be expired while one is on nonimmigrant status here in US. This scared me to death. Is it true that passport should have at least 6 months validity always here in US while being on h1b ?

I am not from one of those countries that have an agreement with the United States allowing entry with a passport until the date of expiration (like Canada or India). But also I am not asking about traveling just asking whether I have been in status in US after 6 month remaining to passport validity.

Please share your insight with me.
