Tasha1
Hi, I am student on F-1, would be starting my Opt from Jan 2013. My question is whether I am allowed to start my own business in the US, along with working for another employer on my Opt. Link to comment
livliv
Yes, you can. But if you work for your own business, the work has to be in your field of study. Link to comment
Tasha1
Hi, Thanks for replying back, I would also like to know whether I can operate that business only for 1 year (my opt time period), or can I extend it further? Link to comment
JoeF
You can have the business for as long as you like, but to work for the business, you need the appropriate work authorization. If you are not on F1/OPT, you can basically only be a passive investor, i.e., having your money in the business and otherwise staying out of it. livliv
You can work for the business for the duration of OPT only. If you otherwise qualify for STEM extension, you can get it and continue working then. Read F student FAQ on ICE website. Link to comment
murphyd
Yes you can but you have to have authorization to work for it. Link to comment
