H1 extension based on approved I140

My 6 yrs H1 was to get over on Jan 8, 2012. The I140 was not approved then. I applied for H4 visa on Jan 3, 2012 and stopped working on Jan 3. H4 got approved a couple of days back. Now, after my I 140 is approved, can I apply for a 3yrs extension based on those 5 days of remaining H1 (Jan 4 - Jan 8)?

Did my H4 begin on the day it was applied (Jan 3) or the day it was approved (March 2)?

The dates should be on the approved H4 petition. But it should have started from Jan 3.
