L1-B change of status

I am in US currently on L1-B with XYZ company,another company filed my H1-B whose status is "Initial Review".

If i gets my H1-B approved then I have to leave my current employer. Can I remain on old status L1-B for some time and then change to H1B.

Someone suggested my I can go out of US and reenter on L1-B status. How much feasible it is? Can I go to Canada and come back within a weeks time.

I was told if I am going for short duration to Canada then I can not change my status.
