Having I-140 filed lead to cancellation of I-130?

My elder brother filed I-130 for me in October 2001. Current priority dates for this is Aug 2000.

I came down to United States on H-1B visa in Dec 2007.

I have renewed my H1B visa and the six years are going to be over by Dec 2013.

My employer is ready to file I-140 for me.

Question is:

Does filing of I-140 lead to automatic cancellation of I-130?

Can I continue to have maintain both I-130 and I-140 and use any one of them whose priority date becomes current earliest.

I-130 and I-140 are independent. There is nothing wrong with having both an I-140 and an I-130.
