I got my H1b stamped couple of years back and have validity till the end of 2012. We have got the visa appointment just for my wife as I did not needed stamping. You must need appointment letter in order to enter consulate. Or if you are able to convince the security person reason for your entry, (no harm in trying) it would be possible. Link to comment
