Re-entry to US after applying for H1-B visa renewal in Canada

Hi All,

I was trying to find this information in this forum but couldn't. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• I have a valid H1-B visa, valid through April 4 2012
  
• I got my H1-B extended for another 3 year term.
  
• I am planning to go for H1-B renewal on Jan 30th to Toronto (before my old visa expires)
  
• I am planning to drive to Toronto.
  

If for whatever reason, my visa renewal process gets delayed, will I will be able to come back to US on my (still valid) visa? or is it like the consulate cancels my (still valid) visa the moment I apply for a new one?

Usually at the interview counter, visa officer which check your passport and will stamp previous h1 cancelled and then start asking questions and all, if for some reason u get 221 you will be stuck
