Vijaykumar
My wife in H4 now she got her H1B approved on DEC 1 2011 and her start date is Jan 18 2012. She received her i797 along with new i94 on Dec 5 2011. Could someone please let me know whether she can apply for her SSN now. Link to comment
JoeF
No, she can't. She can only apply for an SSN once she is in H1 status, i.e., from the date listed on the new I-94. Note that not having an SSN yet does not affect the requirement that the employer has to pay her. Payroll systems can handle the situation of a person not yet having an SSN just fine. Link to comment
kingvijay
Give it at least two weeks from approval for her info to be updated in PIMS. Then you can apply, employment doesn't need to start before you can apply. Link to comment

Then you can apply, employment doesn't need to start before you can apply. As soon as the person reports to work, the person has to get paid. And that "reporting to work" includes going to interviews with clients, etc. Link to comment
